The trailer for the film Cold Warrior was released last week. The independent film from Emily Greenwood is currently in post-production.
‘Cold Warrior’ tells the story of Ana, a young gymnast struggling with the limitations of her talent against the mighty powers of a Communist state that’s pushing her to succeed on a global sporting stage. Source
The film addresses the grim topic of abortion doping, a practice rumored to have been used by Romanian and Soviet coaches during the 1970s and 1980s to improve the athletic performance of gymnasts. Although the subject matter of this film is unsettling, I am glad the topic is being highlighted. Most people have never heard of this heinous practice. I first time heard about this form of doping a few years ago from the documentary below. The portion of the documentary specifically addressing abortion doping begins at 12:12.
More Than A Game: Women’s Gymnastics (A&E Special Presentation)
I am looking forward to see how Greenwood fictionalizes this topic and how Ana will react to the pressures from her coach and federation. You can help the filmmaker and producers complete post-production by making a donation here.
