The final day of rhythmic gymnastics qualifications at the Gymnastics Test Event brings both joyful and dismal news for Olympic hopefuls.
Five additional individuals and four additional groups have qualified to the Olympics from the Test Event. View the list of qualifiers here.
Despite their best efforts, the British Rhythmic Gymnastics Group has not qualify to the Olympics. They missed their target score of 45.233 by the merest 0.273 points earlier today in competition.
As the host nation, Great Britain is able to send representatives to both the individual and group events, if the athletes show a high standard of performance by meeting benchmarks set by British Gymnastics.
Tim Jones, British Gymnastics Performance Director, has confirmed that Team GB will not send a rhythmic gymnastics group to the Olympics:
We went through a process with the British Olympic Association (BOA) of agreeing a standard we felt would show credible performance…It would have been a score that gave us a platform to launch rhythmic into the next four years, but there wasn’t any leeway. They will not be nominated [for London 2012]. Source
A British rhythmic group has never competed at the Olympics. Individual rhythmic gymnast Francesca Jones is still likely to secure an Olympic berth.
