The FIG has released the London 2012 draw and qualifiers for artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline.
The draw determines which subdivision athletes will compete in during the qualification round. The draw is particularly important in a subjective sport like gymnastics. Traditionally, scores are lower during the first subdivisions as judges tend to score more conservatively at the beginning of the competition. Athletes that compete in earlier subdivisions can be at a disadvantage while those competing in later sessions can benefit from scores “building” during the competition.
For the women, Brazil competes in subdivision 1, Italy and Australia in subdivision 2, USA, Canada, Great Britain and France in subdivision 3, Germany, China and Russia in subdivision 4 and Japan and Romania in subdivision 5.
On the men’s side, Korea, Great Britain, China and France compete in subdivision 1, Italy, USA and Japan in subdivision 2 and Spain, Ukraine, Romania, Germany and Russia in subdivision 3.
The top 8 teams in qualification advance to the team final. The top 24 all around athletes (limit 2 per country) advance to the all around final. The top 8 athletes on each individual apparatus (also 2 per country) advance to apparatus finals.
